On October 1st, 2026, an anomaly entered the crowded world of Halloween-themed book drops: a new "translation" of Bram Stoker's Dracula that transposes every word of the 1897 original into a maddening series of "meows." Ostensibly translated "for your cat," some are calling it an occult object, linked to a summoning ritual initially attempted by Thelemic cultist Aleister Crowley in the 1930s.

"This book was actually commissioned by Crowley," says Richard Hansworth II, who maintains an online Thelema community. "He was attempting to contact Bastet, the Egyptian cat-god. He adopted dozens of cats, and tried to get them to recite what were believed to be hieroglyphic spells on an ancient papyrus in his collection." When that didn't work, Crowley briefly abandoned the project.

"Then, his 'eureka' moment came when he revisited the text of Dracula, which he believed to be based on true events. His esoteric reading of Harker's letters interpreted the Count as Bastet, given his predatory nature, strange charisma, and habit of lingering in doorways while his guests were trying to sleep." Crowley is alleged to then have commissioned a "cat-legible" translation of Dracula, but Hansworth has no idea how or why it made it to press this year. "Our online Thelema community is analyzing it," he says. "It definitely contains a very potent magic, especially when given to a cat. To be frank, we think this is dangerous in the hands of the public, tantamount to Barnes and Noble carrying the Necronomicon. If you're tempted to try and decipher it, make sure you're spiritually prepared. And be doubly sure to have your cat secured in its crate."
